ISLAMABAD – The government has announced plans to introduce solar power solutions at Gwadar Port to improve operational efficiency and reduce dependence on external energy sources. Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, confirmed on Wednesday that the initiative is a key part of strengthening Gwadar’s infrastructure under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Strategic Solar Integration
A dedicated sub-committee has been formed to oversee the implementation of solar energy at the port. The committee includes representatives from the Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Federal Board of Revenue, Gwadar Port Authority, Gwadar Development Authority, Quetta Electric Supply Company, and officials from the Prime Minister’s Office.
Their responsibilities include planning and executing the installation of solar photovoltaic systems, battery storage for water facilities, and measures to ensure a reliable energy supply for critical port operations. The plan envisions establishing micro solar grids to meet year-round power demands, including electricity for water pumps and the 1.2 million gallons per day (MGD) desalination plant.
Boosting Local Economy and Infrastructure
Minister Chaudhry highlighted that the solar initiative aims to make Gwadar self-sufficient in energy, facilitating new factories in the Gwadar Free Zone and supplying power to the newly built Gwadar International Airport. The project is also expected to save over a million dollars for the local fishing industry, protecting livelihoods and supporting exports.
The government is working closely with relevant ministries to address Gwadar’s energy and water challenges. Integrating renewable energy solutions is seen as a way to enhance Gwadar Port’s operational capacity, strengthen its role as a regional transshipment hub, and drive economic growth in the region.
This initiative aligns with Pakistan’s broader efforts to promote solar energy, reduce reliance on imported fuel, and enhance national energy security.
