ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN: Global tech giant Google has announced a free one-year subscription to its AI Pro Plan for students worldwide, offering premium access to cutting-edge tools like Gemini Advanced, Gemini Live, NotebookLM, and 2TB of cloud storage. The move aims to empower young learners with advanced artificial intelligence support in research, writing, and productivity.
The offer, valid until June 30, 2025, allows students aged 18 and above to claim a free subscription using a verified “.edu” email address. Once activated, the plan remains valid through July 2026.
However, Pakistani students have largely been left out of the initiative as Google’s system primarily recognizes “.edu” domains — leaving most local universities using “.edu.pk” or private institutional emails ineligible. Only a handful of Pakistani students enrolled in international institutions have successfully accessed the offer.
Educationists and students have expressed frustration over the exclusion, emphasizing that Pakistan’s growing tech-savvy youth could greatly benefit from exposure to AI-powered academic tools. Some hope Google might extend eligibility to “.edu.pk” domains in future phases.
Despite the limitation, the initiative is being hailed globally as a major step toward bridging the gap between AI innovation and education, equipping students with tools to enhance learning and digital creativity.
