In a bold move under its new immigration policy, Germany has deported 81 Afghan men who were convicted of various crimes, making it the largest such operation since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021.
This marks the first deportation under Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s government, which has promised stricter border controls and tougher action against criminal migrants. The deported individuals were all found guilty of criminal offences in Germany and were returned via a transit stop in Qatar, due to the absence of direct diplomatic ties with the Taliban regime.
Germany had suspended Afghan deportations in 2021 but resumed them in 2024, citing public pressure after several high-profile violent incidents. This latest step signals the Merz government’s firm approach toward migrants involved in criminal activities.
The move has sparked debate within Germany, with some political allies supporting the decision while others warn it may legitimize the Taliban administration.
