Gilgit-Baltistan – Pakistan – A rapid outbreak of gastroenteritis in Astore has sent approximately 800 people to hospitals across the district in just four days, prompting immediate intervention from health officials.
District Health Officer Dr. Nawab Khan confirmed that among those affected, five cases tested positive for cholera, while the majority suffered from gastroenteritis. Thanks to swift medical response, symptom severity remained low and no fatalities have been reported.
The outbreak’s epicentre was traced to Patipura, where an emergency medical camp was established to handle the influx of patients. Nearby areas including Chongara, Government Colony, Losh, and the Eidgah locality also recorded new cases. Health teams have now largely brought the situation under control.
Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Awais Abbasi mobilised resources by declaring an emergency at the district hospital. Medical staff were recalled, isolation wards set up for severe cases, and additional beds arranged to manage patient volume. Water supply to affected villages was immediately suspended while water tanks and pipelines were cleaned and tested for contamination.
A team led by the region’s Director General Health inspected water infrastructure, collecting samples from pipelines, storage tanks, and nearby wheat and flour supplies as part of efforts to rule out food-related causes. Awareness campaigns promoting hand hygiene, boiling water, and sanitation are ongoing.
Health officials expressed confidence in quickly containing the outbreak, urging the public to observe preventive measures and stay alert.
