YEMEN – At least four crew members were killed and fifteen others remain missing after a cargo vessel operated by a Greek company was struck and sunk by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea, international maritime authorities confirmed.
The attack occurred near the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait when the vessel, identified as the MV Tutor, was hit by a projectile launched by Yemen’s Houthi group. The vessel sustained severe damage and eventually sank. The crew included nationals from multiple countries, and search operations are ongoing to locate the missing personnel.
This incident marks one of the most deadly maritime attacks since the escalation of Houthi operations in the region, which the group claims are in response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The Red Sea, a critical route for global shipping, has seen rising insecurity in recent months, prompting concerns over the safety of commercial navigation.
The Greek government condemned the attack and called for international action to safeguard maritime routes. Meanwhile, shipping companies have been urged to reroute or increase protective measures when operating in high-risk areas near Yemen.
Naval forces patrolling the region are continuing rescue efforts and investigating the details of the assault.
