WASHINGTON – United States – The world governing body of football, FIFA, announced the creation of an annual Peace Prize, formally titled FIFA Peace Prize – Football Unites the World, with its inaugural honour to be presented on December 5 at the World Cup draw in Washington.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the award is aimed at recognising individuals whose extraordinary efforts have helped bring people together in peace, at a time when global division is increasingly evident. He emphasised football’s unique role in unifying communities and fostering hope across nations.
Although the first recipient has not been revealed, speculation is already mounting over potential candidates. The draw, scheduled to take place at the Kennedy Centre in Washington ahead of the 2026 tournament, will now carry an added layer of significance as the spotlight shifts not only to the sport but to broader themes of global solidarity and diplomacy.
