JAKARTA – Thousands of Indonesians have taken to the streets across major cities to protest against excessive government spending and economic hardship, prompting the deployment of military forces in the capital.
Public anger has been mounting over lawmakers awarding themselves housing allowances nearly ten times the local minimum wage, a move that coincided with soaring inflation and rising unemployment. Tensions reached a boiling point after a delivery rider was tragically killed when struck by a police vehicle during a protest, triggering widespread unrest. Protesters have since ransacked government offices and looted homes, including that of the finance minister.
The unrest has seen a tragic cost, with at least six people killed and hundreds injured. In response, the government revoked the controversial allowances, ordered investigations into police conduct, and pledged tougher action against those responsible for the violence. Military units were placed at key locations like the national monument, and public buildings were fortified as part of the government’s crackdown.
