ISLAMABAD: A disturbing case of emotional blackmail through a phone scam was reported on Tuesday evening, where a caller impersonating a police officer attempted to mislead a citizen into believing that her brother had been arrested in a criminal case.
According to details, the call came from the number +92 331 8666 731, where the individual introduced himself as “Inspector Hashmi” and claimed to be investigating a serious matter involving the recipient’s brother. The caller specifically inquired about the brother’s profession, stating that he worked in the IT sector.
When the recipient grew suspicious and questioned the motive behind the inquiry, the caller abruptly claimed that her brother had been arrested in a rape case. Moments later, another person—pretending to be the brother—came on the line, crying and repeatedly pleading, “Mujhay bachao! Mujhay bachao!”
Despite the emotionally charged situation, the recipient remained composed and immediately contacted her brother through a separate call. It was confirmed within seconds that he was completely safe and at his workplace, with no knowledge of any such incident.
The number used in this attempt—+92 331 8666 731—is now being flagged by concerned citizens as potentially linked to organized scam operations. Authorities are being urged to investigate the matter and take swift action to prevent others from falling victim to similar frauds.
Such emotionally manipulative tactics are becoming increasingly common in Pakistan, where scammers exploit family ties, fear, and urgency to extract information or money. Cybercrime experts advise the public to:
- Avoid sharing any personal or family details over the phone with unknown callers.
- Immediately verify any alarming claims by directly contacting the individuals involved.
- Report suspicious numbers and incidents to local police and cybercrime cells.
The public is advised to remain cautious and share this information widely. If you receive a call from +92 331 8666 731 or experience a similar situation, report it without delay.
