TEL AVIV – Israel: Israeli authorities have arrested a former senior military legal official at the centre of a scandal involving leaked footage showing the alleged abuse of a Palestinian detainee, sparking national outrage and renewed scrutiny of Israel’s detention practices.
The former Israel Defence Forces (IDF) advocate general, Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, was reportedly taken into custody after being declared missing by her family. Her disappearance followed the emergence of a video depicting soldiers assaulting a Palestinian prisoner inside a detention facility.
According to police sources, her vehicle was later found abandoned near a Tel Aviv beach, prompting an extensive search operation involving law enforcement and military units. She was later located alive and subsequently detained for questioning.
The case has intensified criticism of Israel’s military justice system and raised concerns about the treatment of detainees. Rights groups have called for transparent investigations into alleged human rights violations within detention centres and demanded accountability for all involved personnel.
Five reservist soldiers have already been indicted on charges of inflicting serious bodily harm under aggravating circumstances, marking one of the most serious internal scandals faced by the Israeli military in recent years.
