QUETTA – Power supply to Balochistan’s Makran division has been fully restored after a two-day blackout, as electricity transmission from Iran resumed late Monday night, confirmed the Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO).
The restoration came via the 132kV Pishin-Mand and Polan-Jiwani transmission lines, reviving operations at grid stations in Mand, Tump, Turbat, Hoshab, Panjgur, Jiwani, Pasni, Ormara, and critically important locations such as Gwadar Port and the New Gwadar International Airport.
The region was plunged into darkness on Sunday at around 2:30 PM, disrupting life in Gwadar, Kech, and Panjgur districts, already battling extreme temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius. During the outage, temporary support was provided through Pakistan’s national grid, but the supply remained limited and insufficient to meet demand.
A spokesperson for QESCO stated that the restoration of power was completed by 1:00 AM on Tuesday, adding that teams worked under difficult weather conditions to ensure rapid resumption of supply. The swift response, according to officials, was made possible through close coordination with Iranian power authorities.
The Makran division, due to its geographic isolation and limited local generation capacity, is heavily dependent on Iranian electricity under bilateral energy agreements. Disruptions in this supply frequently cause hardship in the region, highlighting the urgent need for long-term energy infrastructure solutions.
Local residents, businesses, and public institutions welcomed the restoration, though many continue to call for improved contingency planning and integration with Pakistan’s national grid to reduce dependence on external sources.
