SARGODHA, PAKISTAN: The city of Sargodha has taken a major leap towards sustainable urban mobility with the launch of its first-ever electric bus service, inaugurated by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. The project is being hailed as a landmark initiative to modernise public transport, reduce pollution, and bring affordable, eco-friendly commuting options to the people.
A total of 48 electric buses have been introduced, covering multiple routes across the city and extending service to nearby tehsils including Bhalwal, Sillanwali, Kot Momin and Tehsil Sahiwal. To ensure smooth operations, charging stations have been installed along the designated routes.
The service has been designed with accessibility and inclusivity in mind. While the regular fare has been kept as low as Rs 20, free travel facilities are being offered to students, senior citizens, women, and persons with disabilities. Each bus is equipped with WiFi, mobile charging ports, CCTV surveillance and dedicated seating areas for women, marking a significant upgrade in passenger comfort and safety standards.
The buses will operate daily from 6 AM to 10 PM, ensuring reliable transportation for thousands of commuters. Officials emphasise that the initiative is not just about convenience — it also carries an environmental promise, cutting reliance on fossil fuels and improving air quality across the region.
Observers believe the move signals that sustainable infrastructure is no longer reserved for major cities like Lahore and Karachi, but is now reaching smaller urban centres such as Sargodha. If successfully managed and expanded, the project could become a model for other districts in Punjab and beyond.
