KYIV – Russia launched a massive overnight drone attack on the Ukrainian capital, killing at least two people and injuring 13 others, in what officials described as one of the most intense strikes in recent months.
The assault caused fires and destruction across six districts of Kyiv, damaging residential buildings, vehicles, warehouses, and other non-residential structures. In one of the worst-hit areas, the Shevchenkivskyi district, debris from an intercepted drone crashed through the roof of an apartment building.
Air Defence Responds Swiftly
Ukrainian air defence systems intercepted a majority of the drones, but falling wreckage caused widespread destruction on the ground. Authorities warned of further ballistic missile threats in the coming days and urged residents to remain alert.
Critical Infrastructure Damaged
Among the targets hit was a primary healthcare centre in the Podilsky district, which, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko, was “almost completely destroyed.” Emergency services responded promptly to contain the fires and assist those injured in the blasts.
Escalating Pattern of Attacks
This latest assault follows a record-setting barrage earlier in the week, when 728 drones and 13 cruise or ballistic missiles were launched at cities across Ukraine. That wave of attacks had already been declared the largest since the beginning of the war.
The intensified strikes are being seen as part of Russia’s broader strategy to target urban centres and overwhelm Ukraine’s air defence capabilities.
International Context
The timing of the strike also coincides with the resumption of U.S. weapons shipments to Ukraine, following a brief pause in air defence support by the Pentagon. Ukrainian officials say Russia’s renewed aggression is an attempt to exert pressure amid growing international support for Kyiv.
As the situation unfolds, officials in Kyiv have reiterated their call for enhanced air defence systems to protect civilians and critical infrastructure from further attacks.
