GLOBAL – A groundbreaking international study has linked daily intake of processed meats and sugary drinks to a sharp rise in chronic diseases, raising serious concerns about common dietary habits worldwide.
– Published in Nature Medicine, the study reveals that even small daily servings—such as one hot dog or a single fizzy drink—can significantly increase risks of conditions like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and colorectal cancer.
– Specifically, consuming just 50g of processed meat per day was tied to an 11% increase in diabetes risk and a 7% jump in colorectal cancer. Similarly, a single sugary drink daily raised the likelihood of diabetes by 8% and ischemic heart disease by 2%.
– The findings challenge long-held beliefs that moderate consumption is harmless. Health experts now urge the public to cut back on ultra-processed foods and replace them with fresh, whole ingredients.
– The study serves as a wake-up call for consumers and policymakers alike to rethink what’s considered a ‘normal’ diet in today’s fast-paced food culture.
