SAHIWAL, PAKISTAN: Authorities have launched a sweeping crackdown on Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), detaining nearly 170 workers and local leaders across the Sahiwal division in the past 30 hours, signaling escalating tensions between law enforcement and the far-right religious group.
According to official sources, the arrests were made through coordinated police operations across Sahiwal, Okara, and Pakpattan districts. The highest number of detentions was recorded in Pakpattan, where over 70 workers were taken into custody, followed by 60 from Okara and 40 from Sahiwal. Those apprehended include district and tehsil office bearers, ticket holders, and grassroots activists.
Authorities claim the move is a “preventive measure” aimed at maintaining peace and averting potential protests or sit-ins. However, insiders from the party argue that the crackdown reflects growing unease within the government over TLP’s mobilization power and its ability to draw crowds on short notice.
Observers believe this operation is part of a broader national effort to curb the group’s street activism following its repeated confrontations with state institutions. Rights advocates, however, warn that mass arrests without clear charges could fuel further discontent and strengthen TLP’s narrative of political victimization.
With detentions continuing and no official confirmation on release timelines, the situation remains tense in Sahiwal and its adjoining districts. The coming days are expected to reveal whether this crackdown will deter or intensify the group’s momentum on the ground.
