RAWALPINDI – Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir has emphasized the need for a broadened and multidimensional partnership between Pakistan and the United States, rooted in mutual respect, strategic cooperation, and shared interests.
The remarks came during a high-level meeting at General Headquarters (GHQ) on Wednesday, where Gen. Munir hosted a visiting delegation of U.S. Congress members led by Congressman Jack Bergman, along with Representatives Thomas Suozzi and Jonathan Jackson. The U.S. delegation was accompanied by Acting Ambassador of the United States to Pakistan, Ms. Natalie Baker.
According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the meeting focused on enhancing cooperation across a range of areas including defence, trade, investment, and technology. Gen. Munir reaffirmed Pakistan’s desire for a balanced and forward-looking relationship with Washington—one that goes beyond security matters and reflects a broader strategic vision.
“Pakistan values its longstanding ties with the United States and sees great potential in further expanding them in a manner based on mutual respect and shared objectives,” the Army Chief stated.
The U.S. lawmakers praised Pakistan’s sacrifices and pivotal role in counterterrorism, regional stability, and global security efforts. They expressed support for strengthening bilateral cooperation, particularly in sectors such as economic development, technological advancement, and education.
In a key development during the visit, both sides agreed to enhance collaboration on technology and digital capacity building, with MoUs signed for future cooperation in IT training and knowledge exchange—marking a shift toward innovation-driven partnership.
The engagement comes amid evolving global alliances and growing recognition of Pakistan’s strategic importance in the South Asian and broader Asia-Pacific region. Analysts view the Army Chief’s outreach as part of Islamabad’s efforts to reposition its diplomatic and security posture in a rapidly shifting geopolitical landscape.
While recent years have seen a cooling in U.S.-Pakistan relations, Gen. Munir’s message signals a willingness to reset the tone and content of the bilateral relationship. The emphasis on mutual respect, technological cooperation, and economic connectivity reflects a conscious shift from transactional diplomacy to long-term strategic engagement.
As Pakistan continues to navigate internal economic challenges and external security threats, such diplomatic engagements are seen as vital for restoring investor confidence and reinforcing the country’s global standing.
