NEW DELHI — In a thrilling turnaround on Day 3 of the second Test at Arun Jaitley Stadium, John Campbell carried West Indies amid a fierce Karnataka spin attack, leading his team to a renewed fightback despite Kuldeep Yadav’s five-wicket burst.
India had earlier dismantled the West Indies for 248 in their first innings, posting 518-5 declared to build a formidable 270-run lead. Kuldeep Yadav played a starring role in the collapse, picking up figures of 5-82. India then enforced the follow-on, expecting to press for an innings victory.
However, the visitors resisted. After losing two early wickets in their second innings, Campbell steadied the ship, remaining unbeaten at 87. He formed an unbroken 138-run stand with Shai Hope (66*), frustrating India’s bowlers and preventing the innings defeat. Campbell became the first West Indian to register a fifty in this series with a boundary off Kuldeep.
West Indies spinner Khary Pierre praised his side’s application and noted that the pitch might deteriorate further, making every run harder to score. Meanwhile, India’s assistant coach defended the decision to enforce the follow-on but admitted the wicket had not deteriorated as sharply as anticipated.
