YAOUNDÉ — Cameroon’s long-time leader Paul Biya, aged 92, is set to secure an eighth term in office following Sunday’s presidential election, further extending his rule that began in 1982.
Biya’s dominance is underpinned by his firm control over state institutions, loyal security forces, and a divided opposition. Legal amendments, including the removal of term limits in 2008, have also strengthened his grip on power.
Despite the presence of challengers like former minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who has gained popularity in some regions, analysts widely expect Biya to maintain his position amid rising concerns over governance, economic challenges, and health issues.
Biya made only one major public appearance during the campaign, relying heavily on state media and online platforms. Critics have also raised concerns over electoral transparency and fairness.
