PARIS: Spanish football sensation Aitana Bonmatí has etched her name in the record books by clinching the Women’s Ballon d’Or for the third consecutive year, a rare achievement previously accomplished only by football greats like Michel Platini and Lionel Messi in the men’s game.
The Barcelona midfielder enjoyed a season of remarkable consistency and influence, despite her club and country narrowly missing out on two major titles. Barcelona fell short in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final against Arsenal, while Spain finished as runners-up in EURO 2025. Yet, Bonmatí’s leadership and match-winning presence remained undeniable, including her crucial extra-time goal in Spain’s Euro semi-final.
Domestically, she powered Barcelona to a dominant treble, lifting the league, cup, and super cup titles. Her brilliance was further recognised as she was named the Champions League Player of the Season, reaffirming her position as one of the finest playmakers in the game.
Bonmatí edged past strong competition, with Spain’s Mariona Caldentey of Arsenal finishing second, followed by England’s Alessia Russo. The awards ceremony also introduced two new women-specific honours — the Women’s Yashin Trophy for the best goalkeeper and the Women’s Kopa Trophy for the best young player — reflecting a growing recognition of women’s football on the global stage.
Adding to the celebratory night, Arsenal Women were crowned Club of the Year, following their long-awaited Champions League triumph.
In her acceptance speech, Bonmatí dedicated the award to her teammates and supporters, while highlighting the significance of equality in football. “We have shown that women’s football can reach the same heights, and the recognition we receive today is a step forward for the entire sport,” she remarked.
Her third straight Ballon d’Or marks not only personal glory but also a defining moment for women’s football, which continues to expand its global presence and prestige.
