LAHORE – The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed former national all-rounder Azhar Mahmood as the acting head coach of the Pakistan men’s red-ball (Test) team. The appointment is part of the PCB’s continued efforts to strengthen the national setup ahead of the upcoming ICC World Test Championship fixtures.
In a statement released by the board, PCB lauded Azhar Mahmood’s extensive coaching and international cricket experience, expressing confidence in his ability to guide the team through its next phase of development. His coaching contract remains valid until April 2026.
A Familiar Face in a New Role
Azhar Mahmood, 49, has previously served as the national team’s bowling coach and was recently involved in the T20I series against New Zealand. His appointment comes amid PCB’s ongoing transition to reinforce leadership within the red-ball setup.
“Azhar brings continuity, experience and a strong cricketing acumen. We believe he will instil greater discipline and purpose within the Test squad,” stated the PCB.
Mahmood’s cricketing resume includes 21 Test matches and 143 One Day Internationals for Pakistan, as well as a successful career in English county cricket, where he played for Surrey and Kent, and secured two County Championship titles.
Road Ahead: Focus on Test Cricket
Azhar Mahmood’s first major assignment in his new role will be overseeing Pakistan’s home Test series against South Africa later this year, as part of the ICC World Test Championship cycle.
The red-ball coaching position had remained unassigned since the departure of previous coaching staff, and Mahmood’s appointment is expected to bring strategic continuity and direction to the squad.
