RAWALPINDI – Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, has been awarded Azerbaijan’s prestigious Patriotic War Medal, a rare honour recognising his contributions to enhancing bilateral military cooperation and fostering strategic defence ties between Pakistan and Azerbaijan. The award was formally presented on behalf of Azerbaijani leadership by Colonel General Karim Valiyev, First Deputy Minister of Defence and Chief of General Staff of Azerbaijan, during an official ceremony at the General Headquarters.
The Patriotic War Medal is among Azerbaijan’s highest military distinctions, typically awarded for exceptional service in safeguarding national interests and promoting regional security. According to military officials, the decision to honour Field Marshal Munir reflects Islamabad’s consistent support for Baku in matters of defence collaboration, intelligence sharing, and operational coordination.
During the ceremony, Colonel General Valiyev commended Pakistan’s unwavering backing of Azerbaijan during critical military campaigns and highlighted the two nations’ shared stance on global and regional security challenges. He praised Pakistan’s counterterrorism expertise, operational readiness, and training support as key factors in strengthening defence relations.
Field Marshal Munir expressed gratitude to Azerbaijan’s leadership for the recognition, describing it as a symbol of enduring friendship and mutual trust between the armed forces of both countries. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to expanding joint military exercises, defence production partnerships, and strategic dialogue to promote stability in the wider region.
Diplomatic observers noted that the award underscores the deepening Pakistan–Azerbaijan defence axis, which has grown significantly in recent years through high-level visits, defence agreements, and coordinated positions in multilateral forums.
