Swabi – In response to rapidly rising water levels, authorities have opened the spillways of the Tarbela Dam, prompting emergency advisories to communities living along the Indus River.
The dam’s management confirmed that approximately 260,000 to 270,000 cusecs of water are being discharged as part of controlled measures to prevent overflow, especially during the ongoing monsoon season.
District administration officials in Swabi and surrounding areas have issued warnings to residents, urging them to stay away from riverbanks and low-lying areas. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has activated emergency protocols, instructing fishermen, cattle herders, and families near the river to evacuate to safer locations.
According to the Deputy Commissioner, the spillways were opened around midday, with sirens being sounded prior to release. Residents have been advised to monitor alerts and contact helpline 1700 for assistance in case of emergencies.
The release is expected to cause medium-level flooding, with further assessments underway to determine the scale of downstream impact.
Local authorities are on high alert and have mobilized rescue teams to respond to any incidents resulting from water overflow or flash floods.
