QUEENSLAND, Australia – In a historic first for the nation’s space journey, Gilmour Space Technologies launched Eris Testflight 1, the first Australian-made orbital-class rocket. The 23-meter vehicle successfully ignited its four hybrid engines and soared for 14 seconds before a propulsion issue caused it to crash.
Despite the setback, the launch was hailed as a technical milestone, with no injuries or pad damage reported. CEO Adam Gilmour praised the effort, calling the brief flight a “huge step forward” as Australia re-enters the space race after more than five decades.
Backed by AU$5 million in government funding, Gilmour Space plans another test within six to seven months. The flight also carried symbolic items like a jar of Vegemite, marking both patriotism and purpose.
The mission, although cut short, is seen as a promising leap for the country’s growing space ambitions.
