Karachi, Pakistan — Arif Habib, prominent business leader and investor, has expressed optimism that the privatisation of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) could unlock significant employment opportunities and revitalise the country’s struggling aviation sector. Speaking on Tuesday, Habib highlighted that strategic private sector involvement could not only improve operational efficiency but also create jobs across a wide range of industries linked to aviation.
He pointed out that a restructured and modernised PIA under private management could address long-standing inefficiencies, expand domestic and international routes, and enhance service quality, all of which would stimulate direct and indirect employment in sectors such as logistics, ground operations, maintenance, training, and tourism. “Privatisation has the potential to generate thousands of new positions if managed transparently and strategically,” Habib said.
The business leader drew attention to global examples where privatised national carriers boosted economic growth and employment, arguing that Pakistan could achieve similar results. He emphasised that improving connectivity and fostering international partnerships would strengthen the airline’s competitive edge while attracting foreign investment, further multiplying job opportunities.
Addressing concerns over current employees, Habib stressed that employment safeguards and retraining programs must be included in the privatisation process. Protecting worker rights and providing skill enhancement would ensure a smoother transition, maintain morale, and build confidence in the reform process.
The federal government has reiterated its commitment to PIA’s privatisation, citing it as a key component of broader structural reforms aimed at reducing fiscal losses and enhancing national assets’ efficiency. While proponents see job creation and operational revival as major benefits, critics have voiced concerns over potential layoffs and the long-term security of national assets, calling for transparent oversight and inclusive strategies.
As the debate unfolds, Habib’s remarks reinforce the view that PIA privatisation, if executed carefully, could act as a catalyst for both job creation and broader economic revitalisation, benefiting not just the airline but the wider aviation ecosystem and Pakistan’s economy.
