KARACHI: Renowned Pakistani musician and composer Bilal Maqsood has paid a heartfelt tribute to his father, legendary writer and satirist Anwar Maqsood, crediting his unwavering encouragement for shaping his artistic journey.
Speaking during an audition segment of Pakistan Idol, Bilal recalled how his father’s appreciation — even for his earliest and imperfect songs — played a vital role in building his confidence as a child. “When guests came over, he’d proudly say, ‘Listen to Bilal’s song,’ and I’d perform at the keyboard, just eight or nine years old,” Bilal shared with a nostalgic smile.
He emphasized how his father’s positive reinforcement allowed him to grow freely as a musician. “If parents start rejecting children early on, saying ‘don’t do this’ or ‘you’re doing it wrong,’ that’s the end. My father never did that — he encouraged me no matter what,” he reflected.
Bilal further noted that Anwar Maqsood’s creative influence extended beyond family life, inspiring and shaping the lyrical depth behind many of Strings’ iconic songs. Their collaboration, though often unspoken, became a cornerstone of Bilal’s career — a rare blend of literary brilliance and musical soul.
His reflections serve as a powerful reminder of how parental belief can ignite lifelong passion, nurturing creativity that thrives under love and trust rather than criticism.
