KARACHI – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall across Karachi and parts of Sindh over the next 24 hours, raising concerns of renewed flooding after persistent heat and humidity. The forecast signals a serious escalation from the current weather patterns and prompts immediate attention to preparedness.
According to the PMD, the city can expect torrential downpours ranging from 50 to 80 millimetres, while hilly regions such as Hyderabad, Sukkur, and Jacobabad may witness similarly intense storms. Coastal and low-lying areas are especially vulnerable to the rapid accumulation of water, which could swiftly overwhelm drainage systems.
City engineers have already begun urgent preparations, clearing storm drains and mobilising sewerage pumps in flood-prone sectors. However, residents and local officials remain anxious, recalling recent incidents where ordinary rain disrupted traffic, submerged highways, and disrupted daily life for hours on end.
Emergency services are on high alert. Rescue teams are coordinating with municipal authorities, readying boats, and emergency medical aid to respond swiftly to areas that may become stranded. Hospitals have been alerted to potential influxes of patients suffering from water-related hazards such as electrocution, snakebites, or injuries sustained during flash flooding.
Public warnings have also been ramped up—citizens are urged to avoid driving through flooded streets, remain vigilant at night, and secure essential supplies should power outages arise. Local communities are encouraged to channel storm water safely and remove obstructions that can cause blockages.
