KUT, IRAQ – A devastating fire gutted a five-storey hypermarket in Kut, eastern Iraq, claiming at least 60 lives with more than a dozen people still unaccounted for, local officials confirmed. The tragedy took place just days after the mall’s grand opening.
Inferno and Aftermath
The blaze, which began late on Wednesday night, rapidly spread through the building—trapping shoppers and disrupting evening activities. Video footage showed smoke pouring from upper floors and firefighters rescuing trapped individuals from the roof and upper levels. Civil defence teams managed to save more than 45 people amid the chaos.
Casualties and Missing
Authorities reported at least 60 confirmed fatalities, including women and children. Among the deceased, 14 bodies were too severely burnt to be identified. Around 11 people remain missing as recovery efforts continue.
Source of Fire and Investigation Underway
Preliminary findings indicate the fire may have originated from an explosion in an air-conditioning unit on the first floor. A full investigation has been launched, and investigators are expected to reveal initial conclusions within 48 hours. Legal proceedings have been initiated against the building owners and mall operators.
Safety Concerns and Government Action
The governor of Wasit province confirmed a three-day period of mourning and pledged decisive legal action against those responsible. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has ordered an immediate, thorough inquiry into the incident and instructed the Interior Ministry to implement measures preventing future disasters. The fire has reignited broader concerns about construction standards and public safety regulations in Iraq—especially following other recent deadly fires in hospitals and wedding halls.
