LAHORE – Authorities have issued a high alert as the River Jhelum is expected to face an exceptionally high flood within the next 24 hours. According to the Flood Forecasting Division (FFD), water inflows at Mangla Dam could rise to a dangerous 350,000 to 450,000 cusecs.
At present, Mangla Dam’s water level stands at 1,186 feet, just 56 feet below its maximum capacity of 1,242 feet. While the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) and WAPDA have expressed confidence in the dam’s ability to handle the pressure, officials are closely monitoring the situation.
Rescue teams, including military support and helicopters, have already been deployed to vulnerable areas. Local authorities have urged people in low-lying and riverbank areas to stay alert, follow instructions, and prepare for possible evacuation if the water level crosses critical thresholds.
Emergency response units across Punjab and Azad Kashmir have been put on standby, and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned of flash floods if the situation worsens.
