NEW YORK – Pakistan has formally alerted the United Nations to a rising threat of cross-border terrorism emanating from Afghanistan, citing increased coordination among banned outfits including the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), and the Majeed Brigade. In an address to the UN General Assembly, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad highlighted recent terror incidents in North Waziristan and Bajaur that resulted in significant casualties, including the deaths of military personnel and a senior civil officer. He warned that many of these attacks were being launched from Afghan soil, exploiting the power vacuum and ungoverned spaces. Ambassador Ahmad expressed concern over the growing nexus between the TTP and internationally recognised terror groups such as IS-Khorasan and Al-Qaeda. He pointed out that approximately 6,000 TTP fighters are currently operating from within Afghanistan’s borders, presenting a major security risk to Pakistan and the wider region. The ambassador also noted that advanced weapons left behind after the 2021 withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan have strengthened the capabilities of these terror outfits, enabling more complex and lethal attacks. Pakistan urged the international community to take firm action against the use of Afghan territory by terrorist groups and called for collective regional efforts to ensure that Afghanistan does not become a sanctuary for militancy. Islamabad also reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement with Afghanistan to address mutual concerns through dialogue and cooperation. This story has been reported by PakTribune.
