KARACHI – The Sindh government has suspended the Director General of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) following the collapse of a five-storey residential building in Lyari’s Baghdadi area, which resulted in the deaths of 27 people.
Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon confirmed the suspension and said the building had previously been declared dangerous. He revealed that several eviction notices had been issued to its residents since 2022, but were not acted upon.
The provincial government has also directed the registration of a formal FIR and pledged to take the “strictest possible action” against all officials found negligent. In addition, Rs 1 million in compensation will be provided to each of the affected families.
Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani added that other SBCA officials, including the deputy director and building inspectors assigned to the area, have also been suspended.
A fact-finding committee led by the Karachi Commissioner has been constituted to investigate the incident. The committee will submit its report within two days and is expected to assess 51 additional buildings previously identified as dangerous, recommending urgent action to prevent further tragedies.
