ISLAMABAD – Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai is expanding her advocacy beyond education—this time focusing on empowering female athletes through a newly announced sports investment initiative.
Sources close to the project reveal that Malala intends to fund sports programmes, athletic scholarships, and training camps aimed at girls across Pakistan. The initiative will also support grassroots teams and seek to improve facilities for school-based competitions.
Malala made the announcement via social media, emphasising that sports offer key advantages for girls: from building confidence and leadership to enhancing health and community belonging. Her message noted that a strong support system for female sports can help tackle both gender inequality and youth disconnection.
This move aligns with Pakistan’s growing interest in women’s team sports—following the successful launch of the women’s cricket league and rising visibility of female athletes in other disciplines. Analysts believe Malala’s backing could bridge gaps in infrastructure, funding, and mentorship that often affect girls’ sports participation.
The campaign is expected to include public–private collaborations, partnerships with school boards, and engagement with local philanthropists. A formal roadmap is anticipated soon, coinciding with efforts to mark International Olympic Day later this year.
Experts suggest that while investment is the first step, sustained results will depend on long-term planning, inclusive programming, and visibility for female role models.
