KYIV – At least 14 people lost their lives and over 40 were wounded after a deadly overnight Russian assault hammered Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, in one of the most intense attacks in recent months.
The barrage, launched in the early hours of Monday, struck multiple residential areas and civilian infrastructure, according to Ukrainian officials. Emergency services scrambled to pull survivors from the rubble, while plumes of smoke rose over parts of the city.
Among the casualties was a 62-year-old American citizen, caught in the blast from a missile that hit a high-rise apartment block in the Solomianskyi district. The strike destroyed several floors of the building, leaving dozens homeless and injured.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed that more than two dozen sites across the city were hit by a combination of drones and missiles in the nearly nine-hour-long attack.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike as another act of “terror against civilians,” accusing Moscow of deliberately targeting non-military zones. In Odesa and other cities, similar strikes left more injured, further deepening fears of a renewed wave of escalations.
Russia, meanwhile, claimed its strikes were aimed at military targets, though evidence on the ground paints a grim picture of widespread destruction in civilian neighborhoods.
Kyiv residents are once again bracing for more violence as air raid sirens continue to echo through the capital.
