KARACHI – A two-storey residential building partially collapsed in Karachi’s Kharadar area late Monday night, prompting a swift rescue operation that resulted in the safe evacuation of 22 people. No casualties or serious injuries were reported.
According to rescue officials, the building had shown signs of structural weakness prior to the incident. Emergency responders, including Rescue 1122 and the Karachi Fire Brigade, reached the site promptly and managed to evacuate all remaining residents before further damage occurred.
Locals stated that visible cracks had emerged in the structure days before the collapse, and many families had already vacated the premises. “We had warned the authorities, and thankfully, action was taken in time,” said a resident of the neighbourhood.
The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has launched an inquiry into the incident and sealed off the site to prevent entry. Officials said the structure had not been cleared for occupancy and was on the authority’s list of dangerous buildings.
Kharadar, one of Karachi’s oldest neighbourhoods, is home to many aged and poorly maintained residential buildings. With the monsoon season approaching, authorities have reiterated their warning to residents of structurally compromised buildings to evacuate immediately.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the condition of old and unregulated constructions in the city, with civic bodies urging a coordinated effort to identify and rehabilitate high-risk structures before further incidents occur.
