Ryan, the Black Sticks Captain, is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world. Ryan’s leadership and on-field play making have been a key to his side’s success in 2006. Ryan has traditionally played as an inside forward, but he also took on the centre midfield role this year, following the retirement of long time captain and centre half Simon Towns. He provides his team with important "go forward" in either position. Ryan has fought his way back from breaking his tibia which he incurred in a practice match two months before the 2004 Athens Olympics. The injury forced the Aucklander out of the Olympics and he only returned to international hockey in November, 2004 at the Champions Trophy tournament in Pakistan. Still only in his mid 20s he has played over 150 games for New Zealand.
