Seven Pakistanis progress to pre-quarters

KARACHI: Seven out of eight Pakistan cueists at the second Asian Team Championship and third Asian 6-Red Snooker Championship cruised into the pre-quarterfinals on day two of the competition at Avari Towers on Monday.

Former IBSF World Champion Muhammad Asif and Muhammad Sajjad led Pakistan into the top 16 slots and remained unbeaten.

Asif defeated Afghanistan's Muhammad Raees Senzai  5-3 on day two of the tournament, meanwhile, Sajjad, who has been the former Asian number two, registered his third win in the event. He outclassed Mutaz Salaymeh 5-0.

Young talent Hamza Akber won his third match as well. He defeated Afghanistan's Ali Ahmed Yousofi 5-3, while Muhammad Asif Toba won against Singapore's Lim Chun Kiat 5-3.

Asjad Iqbal also registered a win against India's Varun Madan 5-0. Sohail Shehzad overcame Bahrain's Punit Popatlal 5-4. However, Shahid Aftab won his match against Bahrain's Majed Saeed Nabi 5-2 but lost to Iran's Hossein Vafaei Ayuri 5-1.

Abdul Sattar also failed to make his mark in as he lost to Hong Kong's Au Chi Wai 5-3.

Meanwhile, bigger upsets involved top Indian player Kamal Chawla crashing out of the competition.

However, his compatriot Rahul Ajay, Iran's Amir Sarkosh, Thailand's Bonyarit Kaettikun, Afghanistan's Saleh Muhammad and Hong Kong's Au Chi Wai are among the 16 players in the pre-quaterfinals.

The tournament is featuring cueists from 11 countries vying for the 6-Red title individually, whereas the team championship will begin on August 20.
