Aisam beat Dineshkanthan 3-1 in three hours and 45 minutes of highly entertaining match which was witnessed by a pack to capacity crowd, thus giving Pakistan a 3-2 victory against Sri Lanka. As Aqeel Khan had lost against Sri Lankan top player Godamanna in straight sets in two hours and 30 minutes and the outcome of the tie was left to be decided in the fifth and final match.

Talking exclusively to this scribe from Sri Lanaka, Pakistan Davis Cup team captain and coach M Khalid said: “It is a very proud moment for the Pakistan tennis as it was Aisam who guided us home. After the loss in the first singles match, people had started to write off Aisam and blamed him that he is no more a valuable player and especially not a player whom country could rely in singles matches, but Asiam had proved all his critics wrong by winning the most important match and guiding Pakistan to a deserving Davis Cup triumph.” “Aqeel started the singles match against Godamanna well as the first set was a tight affair in which Godamanna managed to beat Aqeel 6-4, but in the remaining two sets Godamanna was at the top of his game winning next two sets 6-3 and 6-2 in two hours and 30 minutes to level the tie 2-2.”

He said it was all left on the outcome of the fifth and final match between Asiam and Dineshkanthan. “Asiam was at the peak of his game and won the first set 6-2, but home favorite Dineshkanthan bounced back to take the second set 6-3, that was all he could get from the Pakistan's one and only international tennis player, who used all his international experience and brushed aside Dineshkanthan in the next two sets, winning 6-4 and 6-3, thus giving Pakistan a deserving 3-2 victory in the Davis Cup tie against Sri Lanka,” Khalid concluded.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) president Dr Syed Kaleem Imam has congratulated Pakistan Davis Cup team on winning the important tie against Sri Lanka and promised his all-out support to all the players in future too. Talking exclusively to this scribe from Sudan, Kaleem praised the entire Pakistan Davis Cup team especially Aisam and Aqeel and termed them the heroes of the country. He said winning against Sri Lanka was not an easy task as both Aisam and Aqeel had never played against them and the conditions were also not in favour of them but they played superbly especially the doubles victory was very important in this tie. “I am quite confident Asiam and Aqeel along with other upcoming players will bring such great moments for the country in future too,” Kaleem concluded.

End.
