7-Nation Snooker: Pakistan's Asif, Sajjad and Sattar move into quarters

KARACHI: Pakistan's trio of Muhammad Asif, Muhammad Sajjad and Abdul Sattar advanced to the quarterfinals of the Jubilee Insurance 7-Nation Snooker Championship after registering victories here on Tuesday.

Pakistan No. 1 Asif was involved in a marathon seven-frame battle with Mohammad Mustufa Shehab of United Arab Emirates (UAE) before qualifying for the last eight stage. Sattar made his entry into the last eight stage by beating Saeed Abooyesani of Iran 4-1 with a neatly chalked out break of 96 in the penultimate frame. Sajjad qualified for the knock-out round with a commanding 4-0 victory over compatriot Vishan Gir with a break of 81 in the final frame. Hossein Vafaei Ayouri of Iran emerged as the Group A xhampion when he beat Noppon Saengkham of Thailand 4-2 to register his fourth straight victory. Ayouri carved out the breaks of 82 and 84 in the match. Former Asian champion Yasin Merchant of India also qualified for the knock-out round despite losing his final league outing to Mohammad Ali Joaker 4-2. The quarterfinals will be played on Wednesday (today) in two sessions.
