Police baton charged peaceful journalists rallies and arrested several newsmen in Islamabad and Lahore two major cites of Pakistan on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day on May 3.

Journalists belonging to different newspapers, news agencies and electronic media took out rallies in all the big cities of Pakistan in favor of their demands, particularly the implementation of 7th wage awards a demand of the Journalists to pay them in accidence to their position in society.

According to the reports, the rallies were peaceful, and the journalists had intended to march towards the Prime Ministerís House in Islamabad and Chief Ministerís house in Lahore. However, heavy contingents of police, most of them in plain clothes, resorted to baton charge on the newsmen and arrested several of them.

Squeezed by the public outcry, the government announced to form a committee comprising members of the national assembly (Pakistanís Top Legislative body) to probe into the matter, however in another surprise move, the ruling coalition reversed the decision without citing any reason the other day and took back the resolution presented in the National assembly.

The Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Sher Afghan Niazi told the house that the decision had been reversed on the directive of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.

On the other hand, the Federal Minister for information, Shaikh Rasheed Ahmed says the government believes in freedom of press, and for the first time in the history of Pakistan TV and Radio licenses have being granted to private sector and more are to follow.

Q-1 Does media really enjoy freedom in Pakistan?

Q-2 Was the police action against journalists legitimate?

Q-3 Does any other government in the world treat their journalists in the same way?

Q-4 what image of Pakistani Government was portrayed in the world after the incident?

thank allah, they wre journalists not the Generalists.

Journalists

Majority of journalists in Pakistan have no proper understanding of mass-communications. They only become journalists because they could not excel in any other field, and becoming a journalist is the easiest thing to do in local news papers, which are nothing but Tabloids. Most of them earn living by blackmailing politicians and celeberities, and when it comes to arrange protests, their congregation practices are worse than illiterate people, therefore, I don't believe the police for baton charge and arresting these , so called, journalists.

Media in Pakistan is more than these journalists can ever imagine. The very reason this speak out is being allowed to operate is becuase of freedom of press.

Secondly, the image of Pakistan is much better, until or unless these journalists for the sake of their own selfishness stop portraying such personal matters of their as national matters.

Thirdly, there's a major need to give proper orientation to these journalists to how to do reporting.

Thanks

Journalists

AA, Should learn that attacking the person and not the subject matter only proves he has no argument with which to sustain his statements. Secondly why hide his identity? Surely he can't be afraid of reprisals. I fail to see how the image of Pakistan is brought into disrepute by the journalists being attacked.Surely it is the Police who are displaying an image inimical to a 'Free" Society. When a country's MEN allow unrestrained equality to Females. and religious leaders, allow that those of differing religions or no beliefs have as much right as anyone else
then you are on the road to having an image acceptable to most of the world. That the "West" has some undesirable traits is undeniable, but the freedom of choice is paramount. A way of life should not be dictated by Government leaders nor by Intolerant religious mullahs/priests/ or Fundamentalist Fanatics. When AA or Khalid Awan can show me a country dominated by a Religion(Any Religion) that has enhanced the standards of ALL its citizens I may concede that religion has a place in a country's management.

Military will over ride the storm.

I think that there are serious concerns about the internal peace with ethnic peace, peace of law and order and other modes of peace in Pakistan. It becomes collective responsibility of all to attain that peace as the country is an important part of the lives of even those who have lived away for forty years like me.

There are certain rules and discipline to maintain and sustain that peace and I believe that, with the exception of some with world class education, the majority people and the government as well have shown lack of maturity.Every body seems to have gone to max latitudes of expression and criticism that seems like attack or insults of the priviliged.

Then you have a rough, corrupt and disdaining police. And you have the military governance, which is better workable in the battle field more than on the civil society. There is marked difference in civil discipline and military discipline and the religious discipline and all those disciplines are meant to work within their own scope and perspectives.Perhaps it is no body's fault and things have got mixed up so much. Then there are journalists, who want their maximized thoughts mixing in with already admixed judiciary's own maxed freedomized concerns. And then you've got the very hot quazi war type surroundings in the neighbour and the neighbour hoods with the most geo stretegic country populated by not so responsible people.

The civilian governments could not show great deal of honesty and integrity and now the military governments find them hard to penetrate in the civilian masses, who comprise of 99.5 percent of nation's population.

The nation of Pakistan has more pressing and burdened geo stretegic location than any other country on planet earth and has to run the country with governance of Qaddafi type soft or Saddam type hard army with people wanting democratic freedom like Britain's with corrupted character of the people like Nigerians. So, the situation is tough and getting tougher for all,but Allah will save the country as HE allways has had and did.

May be accomodating others and getting soft on fellow countrymen may redress some or many concerns.

ONE THING WE ALL,INCLUDING JOURNALISTS AND THE JURY AND EVER BODY ELSE, HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THAT WE CANNOT SURVIVE WITHOUT EACH OTHER.CURRYING POLITICAL FAVOURS OVER THE NATION WIDE EMBRACE OF FELLOW COUNTRYMEN WILL GET US NO WHERE.I THINK THE NATION CAN AFFORD TO PAY COMPENSATION TO THE RELATIVES OF THE DEAD IN KARACHI'S 5-12 TRAGEDY AND WRITE IT OFF AS A NATIONAL FOLLY,WHERE EVERY BODY ACTED WITH LACK OF MATURITY.CONFRONTATIONS WOULD TAKE US NO WHERE AND WOULD RATHER DESTROY US.LET US ALL CLEARLY KNOW AND UNDERSTAND IT VERY WELL THAT EVEN IN AMERICA OR CANADA YOU CANNOT SURVIVE AS A JOURNALIST IF YOU START WRITING A WORD AGAINST THE TASTE OF THE JEWS.ANY OF YOUR JOURNALIS GRAND WORK WITH COUPLE WORDS FAVOURING MUSLIMS CAN END YOUR CAREER AS A JOURNALIST.MILITARY IN PAKISTAN IS MORE OR LESS POWERFUL LIKE THE JEWS IN AMERICA OR CANADA AND THEY HAVE NOT ONLY HOLD AND CONTROL OVER THE GOVERNANCE, MILITARY OR CIVILIAN,THEY ALSO NOW CONTROL THE SENSITIZED INDUSTRY, FINANCE AND ECONOMIC STRUCTURE OF THE COUNTRY.I WOULD CHALLENGE THE JOURNALISTS OR THE JURY TO COME TO AMERICA OR CANADA AND SEE IF A SINGLE WORD OF THEM GETS PUBLISHED HERE AS CRITICAL OF JEWS OR FAVOURING MUSLIMS.THE PRESS AND PEOPLE FEEL HAPPY AND COMFORTABLE READING ABOUT MUSLIMS AS TERRORISTS OR SICK PEOPLE AND JEWS AS THE CHOSEN ONES.ANY ONE TRYING TO BREAK THAT TABOO IS OUT OF WORK OR BUSINESS HERE.

Here are my answers to your questions.

Q-1 Does media really enjoy freedom in Pakistan?
Answer: Yes,100 percent freedom exists there of the media. You only feel the crunch when you start hurting military brass in your criticism.Any body could say any thing about Bhuttos or Nawaz. You have to stay within a certain threshold like you stay about when you write even a word criticising Jews in America.Even the jury and the journalists and the engineers and doctors and lawyers have to behave with discipline about each word you utter about the jews here.

Q-2 Was the police action against journalists legitimate?
Answer:
Legitimate or not, police will do exactly what the police will do in America when you try to write a word against the jews in America or Canada. It will not be published with 100 percent surity. If it does by mistake, then you can expect every body coming to your neck.

Q-3 Does any other government in the world treat their journalists in the same way?

Answer:
Other governments will first arrest any writing or TV critical of the priviliged class like the Jews in America. So,the stage will never arrive at what has happened in Pakistan now.

Q-4 what image of Pakistani Government was portrayed in the world after the incident?

Answer:In today's world power is all that matters. Who can stop Bush.America likes Pak military, which will over ride the storm. No body in the world cares about right or wrong.
