Former prime ministers, Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif have signed the long-awaited Charter of Democracy (CoD), which commits the PPP and the PML(N) to struggle against dictatorship and on coming to power do away with the ‘distortions’ made in the Constitution after the overthrow of the PML-N government.

Disbandment of the National Security Council has also been promised by the charter. The two sides have also pledged not to approach the army to come to power.

The two sides pledged that they would not strike any deal with the military government terming General Pervez Musharraf a military dictator.

The two former premiers reiterated that free and fair elections were not possible under the supervision of Gen Pervez Musharraf and that both the exiled leaders would return to the country together before the election. However, they did not say that they would return by the same flight.

Here are the questions
1) Will the charter of democracy help restore true democracy in Pakistan?
2) Rejecting the CoD, General Musharraf says the former premiers want to loot the country again. What do you think about that?
3) Are Benazir and Nawaz sincere with each other or have got united for power only?
4) Do you think Benazir and Nawaz Sharif will return to Pakistan before 2007 elections?
End.

Pharmaceutical Vs Democracy!

Quite a comparison or method of comparison Dr. Bhattacharyya, is there a pill of democracy available in the west? other than RU486.
All the various pharamaceuticals you specify have proven to be aborting democracy if any of these were meant to instill democratic values.
Even many of the pharmaceuticals of west dont work similarly for the patients of the east so how would their democracy work or even establish itself.
With due regards I would like to mention that democracy is a big YES however WESTERN form of democracy is NO NO NO.
Not just to oppose your view but having seen and observed that it does not practically work for our masses.
It requires a lot more of civic disposition by the people of a country that employs western democratic methods to run it's affairs.
At least in my limited knowledge and humble view I believe that it will take another few generations before our people are prepared to employ democracy in the western form.

Understand the meaning of a democracy

Democracy wont solve the problems of pakistan. Neither did it solve the problems in india. but what it did in india was to provide a peaceful framework to resolve those problems or work on them while publicly displaying our dirty linen.

Many pakistanis and even indians assume democracy will solve the problems of the nation . It wont, but it will allow the people to elect someone with a vision and charisma

The other elements for a working democracy include an independent judiciary and independent election commission.

The fourth and one of the most important is economic empowerment. Without it, no liberty makes sense. I hope the new leaders of pakistan will take up the painful process of building these institutions that may eventually remove them from power peacefully

To Bleed

It is never the true democracy but the western form of capitalism. The true democracy is Islamic democracy. This is not the need but that makes bleed the poor folk and those out of political gangs.

Mohammad Shamaun Pasha, Pakistan - 01 April, 2008

If you can think of democracy a need or not? then Pakistan really does not deserve democracy. democracy is for developed nations where every body has freedom to speak to choose his or her realizion of choice etc. already pakistan has decleared itself a islamic nations so how it can be a democratic nation? The selection of releazion and all the releasion has equal waitage are the definitions of democracy.
