Muhammad Sanghir, a native of NWFP, detained after US led attacks over Afghanistan from Northern Kunduz province and freed after 10 months being declared “innocent” by US Officials. According to Muhammad Sanghir he went to Afghanistan for preaching three months before the war began. The US forces arrested him and withheld at Guantanamo Bay for ten months unlawfully.

Sanghir informed reporters, “when I was released, my U.S. captors promised me $2,000 in compensation when I got off the plane in Pakistan -- but I received only $100”.

Sanghir has sent legal notice to the U.S. Embassy through local court, which, claims that Sanghir \\\\\\\"suffered mental shock, financial loss, physical victimization, estrangement and religious victimization\\\\\\\" while in American custody at Guantanamo. He wants $10 million for mental out burst and another $400,000 for debts faced by his family while he was in detainees’ camp and damage to his business of sawmill.

Do you think his claim for US$ 10 Million is justified and he should be paid ?

Should all other detained prisoners at Guantanamo Bay have an access to lawyers ?

Reader Comments:

Millionaires club!

He should be thankful to GOD that he is not laguishing as others. He should ask for the
compensation that must not cater for other's greed, but to help him and his family to their financial needs.

Should and Should not

Pakistan is 'earning' much more than it seems so US officials may not likely pay Muhhamad Sanghir as Al Qaida hunt is on its way and coalition forces have much more to do than this and also US state and defence dept may not deal it directly and put its responsibility on US high commision in pakistan

Ata Muhhamad Bux, Pakistan - 12 July, 2003

Of course he deserved the money, he was in Afghanistan with pure innocence, obviously have done nothing wrong. It goes to show how well the U.S. intelligence is. Therefore I believe the prisoners in Guanatanamo Bay deserve lawyers.

Fairose Qayeum, United Kingdom - 16 July, 2003

He should get compensation, but some Govt. organisation or NGO should take up such cases. Govt. of Pakistan can not fight for rights of such innocents because they them selves are dependent on American Aid to run their economy
