RAWALPINDI: The Lahore High Court (LHC), Rawalpindi bench, here on Monday directed the counsel for Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan to inform the court after asking from him whether or not he had given any statement to a Washington Post journalist regarding nuclear proliferation.

The bench, comprising Justice Nasir Saeed Sheikh and Justice Khawaja Imtiaz Ahmad, issued these directives while hearing an intra-court appeal of the government against the removal of restrictions on the movement of AQ Khan through a court order.

During hearing of the case, Deputy Attorney General Ahmar Bilal Sufi pleaded before the court to direct AQ Khan to refrain from issuing statements to the press regarding nuclear proliferation.

He was referring to a statement that a Washington Post journalist claimed AQ Khan gave to him, wherein he had said China helped Pakistan in developing nuclear technology.

Both the parties in this case sought some time from the court to resolve amicably the issue of free movement of AQ Khan with mutual consultation.

The court, while adjourning the hearing till November 19, gave further two days time to both the parties.

During the last hearing, the court had observed that it would be better that both the parties — the government and AQ Khan — resolved the issue of free movement amicably, otherwise, the court would give its decision on merit.

In another case, an LHC bench restored the election appeal of Punjab former chief minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi wherein he had challenged Muhammad Faiz Tamman, his contender in the February 2008 elections, as returned candidate from NA-61, Chakwal.

Earlier, the court had dismissed this election petition for non-prosecution, but after Pervaiz Elahi filed an appeal for restoration before the court, the LHC bench fixed this appeal for regular hearing.

End.
