UNITED NATIONS: Twenty students from the University of Tübingen, Germany, visited the United Nations in Vienna and the Pakistani Ambassador to the UN in order to prepare for their mission.
In March 2007, more than 3400 students from prestigious colleges and universities from five continents will arrive in New York in order to take part in an exciting experience: for five days, they will be simulating the United Nations within the project National Model United Nations (NMUN). NMUN's goal is to promote the understanding of the work of the United Nations through practical experience in international diplomacy and negotiations.
This year, 26 students from the University of Tübingen, Germany are going to be right at the center of diplomacy. The University of Tübingen, being a reputable German University, whose former delegations were repeatedly awarded for their position papers and delegation appearances, has been preparing for this exciting experience since October 2006. In the University's eleventh year of participation, the Tübingen delegation will represent the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
For the students, the most impressive event was the meeting with the Pakistani Permanent Representative to the UN, His Excellency Ambassador Shabaz. The future diplomats flooded Amb. Shabaz with questions about Pakistani society, history and politics. After three hours of intense discussion, the Pakistani diplomat showed his confidence in the Tübingen delegation's ability to properly present the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
The next day included briefings with several sub-organizations of the UN, such as the UNOPS, UNODC, and UNIS. UN Information Service Director Nasra Hassan offered an inside view on her work as a Pakistani national working for the UN.
The students of this year's NMUN delegation will also use this opportunity to foster Pakistani-German relations. In New York, the 26 students from Tübingen are going to represent the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in 12 committees, thus trying to properly present Pakistani positions. |
