NEW DELHI: Organizers of India’s premier fashion week refused to let an Afghan beauty queen take part in a show inspired by her life as she did not have a work permit, a report said.

Vida Samadzai was lead model for Bangalore-based designer Deepika Govind’s show on Saturday, the United News of India (UNI) news agency reported.

Minutes before she was to appear on the cat walk, Samadzai was stopped by a fashion show official who said she did not have the necessary work permit, the report said .Samadzai, born and raised in the Afghan capital Kabul, emigrated to the United States in 1996 and now holds American citizenship.

The model, who travelled to India on a business visa that expires in November, had sent a letter to the Fashion Design Council of India seeking permission to take part in Govind’s show."

I don’t know why I was not allowed to walk. No money was exchanged," Samadzai,Afghanistan’s unofficial representative at the Miss Earth contest in Manila in 2003, was quoted as saying.

Govind, whose collection titled "Tears of the Muses" was inspired by Samadzai’s life, said she had also sought permission for the model to work for her because "she represented the courage and spirit I believe in."

But FDCI chief Rathi Vinay Jha stood firm."You know that the permission of the Indian government is needed for a foreign model or choreographer to work on a ramp.

"Why should she (Samadzai) be allowed to walk without a work permit?"Samadzai, however, made a brief appearance at the end of the show, coming out on the ramp with Govind to acknowledge an ovation from the audience.

Samadzai is no stranger to controversy, being one of the few Afghan women to participate in an international beauty pageant in decades. Her appearance at the Miss Earth pageant in a bikini raised the hackles of many back home in Afghanistan three years ago.

End.

CORRECT YOUR INFORMATION NEW DELHI: What’s a fashion week minus controversy? While last time’s extravaganza in Mumbai saw wardrobe malfunction, the show in Delhi this time concluded with leggy Afghan model Vida Samadzai being yanked off the ramp minutes before she was to walk.

Reason? She didn’t have a work permit.

Vida, who has been in India on a business visa since November 2005, was meant to walk for Bangalore-based designer Deepika Govind on Saturday. The designer was informed of the change in plan just before the show. "It didn’t even occur to me that there could have been a problem. Vida’s no ordinary titleholder — her spirit and struggle made her an apt choice for guest of honour for my collection," said Govind.

After being on tenterhooks till the last minute, the designer was allowed to bring Vida on stage in the end as a 'special appearance'.

PDM, the show’s event managers, say they were justified in blocking the Afghan beauty pageant queen. "Vida did walk in the end with Deepika but as a celebrity, not as a professional model. We didn’t know she was here on a business visa and we’re very clear that nobody without a valid work permit would be allowed to walk professionally," said a spokesperson for the event manager.

Vida said as a girl who grew up in war-wracked Afghanistan, she could deal with setbacks. "I was feeling bad for Deepika because she was very disappointed but personally, I’ve been through worse times," said the 26-year-old model, who was criticised by the Afghan government for wearing a bikini at the Miss Earth pageant in 2003.

Vida was surprised she wasn’t allowed on the runway on Saturday as she’s been on stage earlier with the same visa. But this has not diminished her love for India. "My father did his masters from Lucknow University. I’ve been watching Hindi films since I was a little girl. I love India and its people. This incident has not left me bitter."
