KABUL: More than 2,000 youths and 12 girls took part in the first joint marathon race here.

The 13 and six kilometres race was started from Ghazi Stadium in the morning and ended at Darul Amaan. This is the first time Kabul witnessed such an activity over the past two decades.

20-year-old Abdul Hamid Salangyar, who covered the 13-kilometre distance in 41.20 minutes was declared winner of the race. Mohammad Azhar, resident of Qala Zaman Khan locality of Kabul and Mohammad Siddiq Chakari got the second and third positions respectively.

Among the girls, Mabooba of the Aisha Durrani High School stood first in the six kilometres race, who completed the distance in 28.20 minutes.

The race was organised by a private cell-phone company the Afghan Wireless Communications (AWCC) to promote peace in the country.

The first position holder of the race was given 50,000 afghanis while those stood second and third got 20,000 and 10,000 respectively from the Bayat Foundation.
