ISLAMABAD, May 18 (Online): Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Maj. Gen (r) Shahzada Alam Malik said PTA is doing hard to spread telecommunication networks across the country to minimize the digital divide between rural and urban areas.
He was addressing a ceremony at PTA Auditorium held on the occasion of World Telecommunication Day- the 17th May.
Chairman PTA said that everybody in Pakistan and abroad is convinced that telecom sector in Pakistan has made tremendous growth and it happened only because of fair implementation of deregulation policies by PTA.
It was not an easy target, Chairman PTA said, to open up the telecom sector but PTA put in every effort to make it a success story and now telecom is the most vibrant sector of the country.
The World Telecom Day, chairman said, reminds us to spread modern telecom facilities to far-flung areas of the country so that poor can get the benefit of it. Pakistan is an active member of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and it has keenly participated in ITU activities, Chairman said.
Mr. Yoshio UTSUMI, Secretary General, ITU,in his special message for Pakistan, has recognized commendable steps taken by the government of Pakistan to regulate and liberalize the telecom sector, Chairman told.
On this occasion Mr. Ahsan Jafri, DG (Information Communication Technology) also spoke on the evolution of telecom systems and significance of World Telecom Day. Syeda Shafaq Karim presented the message of Secretary General ITU. Earlier in a ceremony at PTA headquarter, Chairman PTA hosted the flag of ITU.
It may be added that the World Telecom Day is celebrated every year across the world on May 17.
