Zardari directs govt to provide relief to flood-hit people

KARACHI: President Asif Zardari on Wednesday directed all federal and provincial government departments to undertake every possible effort in a concerted manner to provide relief to the flood-hit people and to ensure that the outbreak of various water-borne diseases is also kept under check.

President Zardari said this while chairing a meeting to review emergency relief readiness in Sindh at Bilawal House. The meeting was attended by Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, Pir Mazharul Haq, Murad Ali Shah, Agha Siraj Durrani, Sharjeel Inam Memon, Muhammed Adil Siddiqui, Haji Muzaffar H Shujrah, Ali Nawaz Rizvi and Jam Saifullah Dharejo.

The president's spokesman Senator Farhatullah Babar said the Sindh CM briefed the president about the latest situation and the devastation caused by the floods in various districts of Sindh, including Sukkur, Khairpur, Jacobabad, Kashmore and Shikarpur. He also informed the president about relief efforts being undertaken for the flood victims.

NDMA Chairman Dr Zafar Iqbal Qadir briefed the meeting about the preparations made by the PDMA to meet any emergency situation. He also apprised the meeting about the efforts undertaken to provide basic necessities to the affected people.

Utility Stores Corporation MD Major General (r) Muhammad Farooq briefed the meeting about the situation vis-à-vis availability of ration and other food items.

While expressing concerns over the devastation caused by the floods, President Zardari directed the authorities concerned to ensure that the affected people were provided with tents, ration and safe drinking water on priority basis. He also directed the officials concerned that medical camps should be set-up for the affected people to provide medical assistance in case of any water-borne disease. The president said all efforts should be made to cater to the needs of women, children and the aged people.

He said that the federal government would be providing all possible assistance to the provincial government in the relief and rehabilitation activities.

The president also directed the CM and members of the Sindh cabinet to monitor the relief activities and maintain close coordination with the officials concerned. He directed them to keep the Presidency informed about the latest situation. President Zardari said that he would monitor the situation and would interact with the district officials and representatives through video-conferencing.

Separately, the spokesman said President Zardari chaired another meeting on law and order situation in the province, especially in Karachi. During the meeting, the president was briefed about law and order situation and various measures that have been taken to keep the situation under control.

Babar said President Zardari reiterated that maintaining law and order in the province, especially in Karachi, was top priority of the government and no effort should be spared in this regard.

The president was also briefed about video surveillance system that has been operationalised in Karachi to monitor law and order situation. The president said all efforts would be undertaken to bring the culprits to justice.
