We must beat polio... By Zunaira

The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nations (UN) have indefinitely suspended the anti-polio campaign in Pakistan after the murders of numerous health workers in different parts of the country. This is such tragic news for Pakistan as it is one of the very few countries in the world where this crippling disease is still prevalent. By allowing fanatical individuals to get away with such atrocious acts, after years of ignorance and neglect, we have put the future of every child in this country at stake.
Imagine a country where the children are not immunised against polio. Sitting in our urban centres and our comfortable homes, we think of it as a disease that can only afflict poor people and their children living in far flung areas. What we fail to understand is that, in no time at all, the disease will spread and will become a potential hazard for every child that resides in elite drawing rooms as well. There is a reason the world battled so hard to eradicate polio.
WHO has also declared that if the number of polio cases in Pakistan does not decline by September 2013, a complete ban on international travel will be enforced on each and every Pakistani no matter what the class or origin. Do we not feel it our moral obligation to do something about this? Are we going to sit back and let militant monsters steal our children of their health and well being? We must band together and continue with the anti-polio drive in any way we can. We cannot let them win this one.
