Violence continues amid 'Karachi Operation': five more dead

KARACHI: At least five people including an inmate were killed in separate incidents of violence in different parts of the metropolis on Thursday.

In the first incident, a man was shot dead at a tea stall located in New Sabzi Mandi within the precincts of Sachal police station.

Police said that victim namely Nadir Ahmed Ali, was sitting at the tea stall when armed riders shot him dead at the spot. His body was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) for autopsy. Police said that victim used to drive a loading pickup in the market, and the motive behind the incident could be of a personal nature, however, further investigations are underway.

Separately, a man was shot dead in Frontier Colony within the jurisdiction of Pirabad police station. Police said that unidentified armed men on a motorbike came and sprayed bullets at the mechanic shop before escaping. Resultantly a man namely Anwar Ali sustained bullet wounds and died on the way to the ASH. Police has yet to ascertain the motive behind the incident and investigations are underway.

Prisoner dies of torture:

In another incident, an under trial inmate, charged under the narcotics act, died in mysterious circumstances at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC).

Muhammad Rahid, resident of North Nazimabad arrested by Civil Line police on Federacy 2, who reached District Jail Malir after a day of his arrest, was rushed to JPMC on Wednesday in a critical condition where he took his last breaths.

Jail deputy superintendent Shakeel Shah when contacted said that police tortured him before he reached the jail. Since the day he arrived at the jail he was admitted to the Jail hospital, and his condition was declared critical on Wednesday, which is why he was shifted to the JPMC, said Shah.

On the other hand, SHO Civil Lines Waqar Tanoli disputed the allegation and informed the under trial prisoner was presented at the court earlier, before being shifted to the jail. He alleged that the jail authorities tortured the prisoner in custody.

Bodies found: Two unidentified bullet-riddled bodies were found from separate localities. The first one found within the vicinity of Zaman Town police station, was shot in the head, while the other one found from Jackson police station limits had been shot multiple times. Both bodies were shifted to the morgue for identification after completing medico-legal formalities.

156 arrested: Meanwhile, law enforcers claimed to have apprehended around 156 criminals including target killers affiliated with a political party during separate raids and operations conducted across the city on Thursday.

As per details, East Zone police detained around four criminals including three target killers from different areas of the city. Their arrests were disclosed during a press conference held at SSP East Pir Mohmmad Shah's office.

Addressing the press conference, the SSP said that target killers were identified as Khalid Iqbal aka Asif, Asghar Ali Magsi, Adnan alias Mobin and Shahid aka Bhaiyya. He further said that they were arrested during targeted raids in Gulzar-e-Hijri area Mobina Town. Suspect Adnan was affiliated with a political party and killed four people, including Muttahida Quami Movement's senior worker Haji Jalal, his son and nephew, said the SSP. Asghar, brother of Lyari gangster Ahmed Ali Magsi was involved in the killing of at least eight people, the officer revealed.

Separately, Saddar police nabbed an alleged suspect Nasir alias Mullah and recovered a Kalashnikov and ammunition from his possession.

Additionally, police arrested Raja Naveed and recovered an unlicensed TT pistol from his possession as well as a motorbike that was snatched from Zaman Town area.

Moreover, Karachi police captured around 131 criminals during 98 separate raids and four encounters. The detainees include one target killer, three extortionists, one kidnapper, six robbers and one absconder, apart from those who have been held for illegal possession of weapons and narcotics.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Rangers Sindh detained around 19 criminals and recovered weapons from their possession. The arrests were made during targeted operations in various parts of the city, including Shah Faisal Colony, Mehran Town, Gulzar Colony, Old Muzafarabad Colony, Moinabad, Musarat Colony, Sher Khanabad, Frontier Colony, Lines Area and Kharadar.
