Used tyres... By Abu Bakar

Through your esteemed news website, I would like to highlight a very important issue, one that the government needs to take more notice of — that of the smuggling of used tyres. Such tyres are considered an environmental hazard in developed economies because they are the perfect breeding ground for epidemic diseases, the least of which is dengue. Last year, Punjab was ravaged by the disease and the main reason behind this epidemic was the used tyres smuggled in without quality control from other countries. Even now, no serious action has been taken against the importers of these unsafe used tyres. Besides the threat of illness, the illegal import of used tyres incurs heavy losses in the market as they fill a certain demand and supply gap but legal importers are then made irrelevant and the local industry incurs heavy losses. I, therefore, strongly request the government of Pakistan to take serious action to halt this smuggling; it is beneficial only to smugglers, custom officials and corrupt retailers. ABU BAKAR KAREEM
