WASHINGTON: The United States will respond if Iran tries to close the strategic Strait of Hormuz at the entrance to the Gulf, US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta warned on Sunday, saying such a move would cross a "red line."

"We made very clear that the United States will not tolerate the blocking of the Straits of Hormuz," Panetta told CBS television. "That's another red line for us and that we will respond to them."

Panetta cautioned global rivals not to misjudge US plans to slash military spending over the next decade, saying America would still field the world's strongest military and nobody should "mess with that."

Panetta, speaking on CBS's "Face the Nation" program ahead of Tuesday's New Hampshire primary, also reminded Republican presidential contenders who have criticised the Pentagon's new military strategy that the decision to cut $487 billion in defence spending was made by a bipartisan Congress.

Panetta was seconded by General Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who said Iran has the means to close the waterway, through which 20 percent of the world's oil passes.

"But we would take action and reopen the Straits," the general said on the same show, "Face the Nation."

Their comments follow Iranian threats to close the strait if the European Union slaps an embargo on Iranian oil, the latest step in a US-led campaign to pressure Tehran to give up their nuclear program. Western powers suspects Iran is bent on gaining atomic weapons, which Tehran denies.

The rising tensions have driven oil prices soaring over 100 dollars a barrel, hitting an eight-month high earlier this week, and sent jitters throughout the oil-rich Gulf amid growing fears of a spiral into conflict.

What to do about Iran also is rising as an in US electoral politics, with most Republican candidates blasting President Barack Obama as too soft on Tehran.

Panetta said the United States does not believe Iran is actively developing a nuclear weapon, and reaffirmed Washington's preference for diplomatic and economic pressure over military action.

"I think they need to know that if they take that step that they're going to get stopped," he said.

At another point, Panetta said, "Are they trying to develop a nuclear weapon? No. But we know that they're trying to develop a nuclear capability. And that's what concerns us. And our red line to Iran is do not develop a nuclear weapon. That's a red line for us."

Dempsey sidestepped questions on the difficulty of taking out Iran's nuclear capability, but said planning was underway for a military option.

"My responsibility is to encourage the right degree of planning, to understand the risks associated with any kind of military option, in some cases to position assets, to provide those options in a timely fashion. And all those activities are going on," he said.

Panetta, meanwhile, suggested the United States would not welcome unilateral military action by Israel against Iran's nuclear facilities. On the Strait of Hormuz, Dempsey said Iran could close the waterway "for a period of time." "We've invested in capabilities to ensure that if that happens, we can defeat that. And so the simple answer is yes, they can block it," he said.

End.

Try dialogue rather than risking like in Poland of WW2

The fact is honestly true that Iranians have not attacked any country first in several centuries if not decades. Even in Saddam's provocations of capturing Iranian oil fields, Iran never carried out the genuine counter threats and Iranian people are pretty peaceful as I found them with my own eyes during my two trips there (2003 and 2007).No matter what the cause, Iran has only warned with nothing more than verbal shots up in the air, which most likely will ever be like that. Iran has done that only when its main lifeline of oil exports is being threatened to be choked.

Well, we live in the law of the jungle and the world is going to stay like that at least for one or two decades more.It is going to stasy for a decade or little more. It could stay longer if America successfully cuts of China's hopes of getting its most urgently needed oil and gas from Iran, which now possesses the world's grandest combined oil and gas hydrocarbon reserves(1200 tcf of gas and 150 billion barrels of oil or 366 bb equiv of oil) compared to Saudis(250 tcf of gas and 255 billion barrels of oil or 300 bb equiv of oil).

I was invited by Iran soon after my gas engineering work was published in the world's very top places in the annual International conferences in 2004 ( LRGCC, GPA, NACE etc) and US miltary 2005. Those days,I was also key engineering support in Canadian Energy sour gas process plants against the world's largest chemical company (UC) in America. So, I got first hand experience and knoledge to handle gas process capabilities in both US and European (BASF systems). I went to Iran 2 times and had the most important engineering sessions of my life in Tehran.

Iranians,I found, were extremely sweet people with prettiest women on planet earth. They have not attacked any nation in centuries if not thousand years and it is best for all to hold back the gun and talk peace.

I love Iranian fruits, dry fruits and its very pretty peaceful people whome I will see again this year.

Let us all be assertive to world peace

It is now the moral duty of all mankind to push for peace and work for peace and hold peace as the most sacred objective. De-escallation and give and take and rolling back the too aggressive designs and talks on others economies choke offs are the prelude to achieve that noble peace.

One should never be too optimistic about war as peace is the only thing that wins for all. Germany moved its troops into Poland in WW2 and Russia followed same to match the Germans even though there was peace pact between Stalin and Hitler then. War motivation and cornering some weak ones are just as bad equally. The world was somewhat lucky that the WW2 weapons of war were incapacitated to reach the oil and gas reserves. Now, if God forbid, we slip into big war, oil will be the first hit to annihilate the world economies and perish, not just destabilize but perish the global economies for good.

Persian Gulph is the world's life line of energy, economy and survival and is becoming more and more so by the day. There must be no guess work or fool paradise fancies for any thing other than peace for all. The economies of Europe, Japan, India and Korea that import more than 80 percent of their oil needs and their economies are more specifically oildependent will be annihilated. There must be no pride in prudent thoughts of win and win only syndrom. You are reaching to the under belly of other big powers like Russia and trying to choke off China's future energy supplies. Any thing more than ugly can happen while someone may be working on going things his ways only for win thoughts.

ONLY PEACE FOR ALL WILL WIN FOR US ALL.LET US THINK OF PEACE AND PEACE ONLY AS THERE JUST IS NO OTHER OPTION FOR HUMANITY NOW OTHER THAN PEACE.

War is just most ugly sin
Only in peace, we all win
Give each other peace embrace
Only the peace got the grace

Kick the war out, we don't need
Don't need war, true indeed
Think humanity is so grand
Give fellow human loving hand

WE WANT PEACE FOR ALL

Reasoning with a BULLY and serenading a BULL are one and the same. Why do we forget that only yesterday the US was telling us Iraq had WMDs? So they went out and invaded and destroyed Iraq, and killed Saddam Hussain, their own agent who had attacked Iran for them. And now, we are expected by these pathological liars and cheats to believe Iran is going to have WMDs. And what of it if Iran does have or develops nuclear weapons? After all, the US has thousands of the stuff and has used it too. And this non-proliferator gave the Israelis the ATOM BOMB in the 1950s by conveniently losing 78 kilos of enriched uranium through a jewish agency! And now all this hew and cry. This is absolutely diabolical.

And now they want to start WORLD WAR III by using Israel to attack Iran. This conflict will be extended to Pakistan with the aim to destroy the facilities of what they used to call Pakistan's Islamic bomb. And another point of their duplicity. The US, Great Britain and France had atom bombs by the thousand long before Pakistan's paltry few but these masters of propaganda never called their own stockpile as CHRISTIAN BOMBS! And why not, you may ask! Anyway, if the US uses Israel as its rotweiler, it will set the middle east and the south east on fire for a thousand years.
AND THAT WILL BE THE END OF ISRAEL!
