US clarifies Panetta's remarks on bin Laden

30 January, 2012

ISLAMABAD: The US embassy has issued a clarification concerning Defence Secretary Leon Panetta's remarks that Osama bin Laden had some kind of support network within Pakistan.

Leon Panetta and his colleagues in the US government have been working hard to improve US-Pak relations since the bin Laden operation, read the clarification issued by the US Department of Defence.

Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said in a statement issued through the embassy that in an interview with a US TV channel several months ago, Panetta made his belief clear that Osama had some kind of support network within Pakistan.

He said the secretary indicated in the same interview that he had seen no evidence that the slain al Qaeda leader was supported by the Pakistani government or that senior Pakistani officials knew he was hiding in Abbottabad.

End.
